If you don’t know what cornhole is, you probably live overseas or haven’t been to a backyard cookout or tailgate in the last decade.  It seems to be everywhere and continuing to grow in popularity because it is just so accessible.  The game is played with a partner and consists of tossing beanbags at pieces of angled plywood with holes cut into them.  The object of the game is to get your beanbag into the hole but underhand lobbing the beanbag at it.

Despite the equipment being fairly simple, these sets can cost a pretty penny!  If you have ever researched a cornhole set, chances are you have victory tailgate ads on your facebook feed, they advertise there a lot!  I had a set that I bought second hand that wasn’t regulation and I wanted to upgrade it to something a little nicer.  I was having a hard time finding reviews that I trust, but I took the leap and bought a set from Victory Tailgate while it was on clearance.

Construction: Unlike many of the boards on the market, the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00K6HRWXA” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Victory Tailgate Cornhole[/easyazon_link] boards are made from plywood, as opposed to the MDF or pressed board that is used in many other sets.  The result is a set that is very durable (able to handle kids jumping on it), more likely to stand up to water (from wet grass, or a little rain, though I would keep this at a minimum) but also very heavy, so I wouldn’t want to have to carry long distances.  The hardware used is also very heavy duty stainless steel, and the legs are made from 2x4s.  You can also buy bean bags ranging from those filled with actual corn (not good for wet weather) and synthetic beads (not as authentic, but great for all weather).

My set had a stained finish, so there were blemishes in the wood that were visible, but they had been filled and sanded down to a smooth finish.  One of the advantages of Victory Tailgate is they offer a full range of decals for their boards, that they will apply for you.  With the decal on, you will never notice the blemishes in the wood.

While the set is finished, the undersides of the boards are not sealed, something to keep in mind for those who play in a wet environment.

Customization: I wanted to customize my boards, but was trying to save a buck, so I thought I would do it myself.  I was able to purchase vinyl decals of my favorite team’s logo off Amazon and apply them myself.  Then I used an [easyazon_link identifier=”B000C02AO2″ locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]acrylic clear coat[/easyazon_link] to cover the boards and the logos.  I did about 7 coats and it took me most of the day.  I also coated the sides, legs, and underside of the game.  The experts recommend using a semi-gloss finish, so that the boards aren’t too bright to look at in the sun. Warning: The decals can be very hard to manage by yourself, take your time and get help.  I didn’t and ruined the decals, my boards still look good, but not as good as they might have if I had waited to get help.

I might drill holes in the side to add rope handles, or I might just buy this [easyazon_link identifier=”B00PJ4CBLS” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]bag[/easyazon_link].

Recommendation: I would say my experience with [easyazon_link identifier=”B00K6HRWXA” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Victory Tailgate Cornhole[/easyazon_link] Boards was pretty great.  So I got to play them last weekend and they came out great and withstood abuse from children jumping on them.  That being said, the finish is VERY FAST and they will need some more scuffing up before they become real playable.  Right now everything slides right off?
