BOTTOM LINE: [easyazon_link identifier=”B07C4825LL” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″]Isle of Dogs[/easyazon_link] is a brilliantly animated movie from the mind of famed director Wes Anderson will entertain older kids and enthrall adults, younger kids might have trouble following it due to the amount of reading involved.
PLOT: This brilliant movie takes place in Japan during a time when there is a virus that has infected many dogs, resulting in the government banishing all canines to the Isle of Dogs, formally a trash heap. A lone human, travels to the Isle of Dogs to search for his four-legged companion, and is joined in his journey by a pack of other neglected animals. CONTENT: This is not intended to be a movie for children, it has some very adult themes (conspiracies, animal testing, murder, revenge), adult dialogue, and adult language (bitch…but it is a dog movie and technically correct). However, if you have older children (8 years old +) they will be able to follow many of the main themes and there isn’t anything I would be overly concerned about. As the movie takes place in Japan, there is the use of a lot of Japanese which is often translated in text, which can make it difficult to follow for audience members who are too young to read.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: This is a visually stunning movie, done in stop motion animation, that lends itself well to big screen. This film is perfectly suited for a back yard movie party. Even with my Optoma HD141x, films with a lot of blacks and shadows can be difficult to see, this film is filled with browns but is bright and vibrant and is a blast to watch on a big screen.
CAST: This is an amazing cast of 49, that provides the voices for the movie, heavier hitters like Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Live Schrieber, Ed Norton, Scarlett Johansson.
I really, really, liked this movie and it had everything that I love about Wes Anderson movies. If you are fan of his work, you will also be a fan of this movie. This movie is a great option for outdoor movie nights when you are hosting a wide range of audiences or if you have any audience that is looking for a little something different.
