I am going to do the best that I can to standardize my reviews between brands of charcoal.
Packaging:
I got my charcoal from Amazon, which means it made the 6 hour flight across the Pacific. The box was actually in pretty good shape. The charcoal is packaged in a woven plastic sack, kind of like a burlap. This is not a great choice for charcoal, while light and cheap, it gets charcoal dust all over. I looked like a chimney sweep when I picked up the bag this morning to fill the Kamado. I have heard they may be changing this…
Taste:
The charcoal is made from the Quebracho Blanco tree, which allegedly means axe breaker. The taste was pretty clean, I didn’t pick up on a real distinct flavor like mesquite.
Size/Shape:
I was really pleased with the size of the charcoal pieces in this bag. The charcoal was still in great shape even after crossing thousands of miles and being kicked around my garage for a couple of months. I didn’t hear the tell-tale sound of charcoal falling through my kick ash basket that I have come to know with other charcoals.
Debris:
This charcoal looks really clean on first impression, no branches, rocks, bits of grass, etc. I may have to update this when I get to the bottom of the bag, but so far so good. When you pay a premium price for a charcoal, you want to get what you pay for.
Burn:
This charcoal lit very cleanly and stayed lit. My favorite part, no sparking! It was also easier to get the grill up to temp in a short amount of time. I give it very high marks for ease of use so far.
Cost:
This is definitely a premium charcoal and you pay a premium price. Not as much as some, but certainly more than many. You can see what the current price is for a 35lb bag[easyazon_link identifier=”B01D5DDT0G” locale=”US” tag=”backyardmov05-20″ cart=”y” popups=”y”]Jealous Devil Charcoal here[/easyazon_link].
Conclusion:
All in all I am pretty pleased with the charcoal. When I get back to the mainland, I will probably try to take advantage of a sale to stock up. I don’t have any problems recommending the charcoal at this point. Certainly worth giving a try.
