I haven’t seen the first Paddington, but I loved Paddington 2. It was very cool watching it in a theater filled with children who heavily invested in the storyline and who audibly reacted to the action on the screen. The team behind the film created a sweet, lovable character in Paddington who translated well to the screen. In some sequences it was a little more cartoony than I think the literary version was (it was a book), but I never felt like it was eye rolling over the top. In fact, I remember thinking some of the sequences were almost “Mr. Bean” like in their understated silliness. The storyline was somewhat predictable, but there was enough quirkiness in the script and characters that I was entertained and engaged throughout. I might be getting older, because I fall asleep in most kid’s movies, but I easily stayed awake through this one!
The film was also very pretty as well and it looked great on the big screen, it had a Wes Anderson feel to me, with neat colors and interesting scenery. This one is a good one to showcase your setup.
Parental Concerns: There is really nothing to be concerned about in this film. There are a few times where there are threats of violence or danger, but they add to the suspense of the film. This film truly is safe for the whole family. What I personally appreciated was that this film didn’t have all the low brow humor, or kids misbehaving that corrupt a lot of “family films”.
